F1 helmet replicas

From an 80-euro LEGO set to a full-size replica made by the same factory as the real thing: what each type is, who makes the official versions, and how to avoid knock-offs.

LEGO F1 helmets

LEGO's Editions range includes brick-built driver helmets with a stand and minifigure, for ages 14 and up: Charles Leclerc (43014, 886 pieces), Lewis Hamilton (43022, 884), Oscar Piastri (43017, 793), Lando Norris (43023, 793) and Ayrton Senna (43024, 931). Each costs $89.99, €89.99 or £79.99.

Spot a fake: genuine sets carry a LEGO set number (430xx) and the official team branding.

1:5 mini helmets (Spark)

Spark makes small resin-and-plastic display helmets in a clear case, about 8 cm across, with an opening visor. They sit between the 1:8 models and 1:2 replicas, and new designs are often released as pre-orders after a race. Prices at specialist model shops run from about £40.

Spot a fake: the genuine item is branded Spark and has a Spark part number (5HF…). Unbranded resin helmets sold as "inspired" or "style" designs are not official.

1:2 half-scale replicas (Bell, Schuberth)

Half-scale replicas are made by the helmet makers themselves. Bell's are officially licensed by the team and handcrafted in the same factory as the full-size HP77 race helmet, with a fibre-reinforced shell, a fixed visor and a collector's box, at around $170 (about $210 with a display case). Small details such as chrome finishes and logo placement can differ slightly from the race helmet. Max Verstappen's 1:2 and 1:4 helmets are made by Schuberth and sold through his own store.

Spot a fake: look for the maker (Bell or Schuberth) and the team licence on the product and packaging, a fibre-reinforced shell rather than resin, and the maker's collector box. Buy from the team store, the driver's store or an established dealer.

1:8 and 1:10 models (Minichamps)

Minichamps made small display helmets, mostly of older and historic designs such as Ayrton Senna's, and today they are mainly found second-hand.

Spot a fake: check for the Minichamps part number on the box.

Full-size (1:1) replicas

Team stores sell full-size display replicas made by the drivers' helmet makers, with a display case and a certificate of authenticity. They cost thousands, not hundreds; a real race-certified Bell HP77 helmet costs around $5,000 on its own.

Spot a fake: an official 1:1 names the helmet maker and comes with a certificate. A full-size "replica" for a few hundred dollars with no maker named is not official.

Signed and race-worn helmets

F1 Authentics is Formula 1's official memorabilia platform, run with the Memento Group since 2019. It sells race-used items, signed helmets and replicas by auction and buy-now, each with a certificate of authenticity. Auction houses also sell replica helmets, so check whether a lot is race-worn or a replica.

Questions

How can I tell an official F1 helmet replica from a knock-off?

Official replicas name the maker (LEGO, Spark, Bell, Schuberth, Minichamps) and usually the team licence on the product and box. Listings that say "inspired" or "style" and name no maker are not official.

What scale are F1 mini helmets?

The common scales are 1:5 (Spark, about 8 cm in its case), 1:2 half-scale (Bell and Schuberth), and smaller 1:8 and 1:10 models from Minichamps. LEGO sets have no stated scale.

Where can I buy a race-worn or signed F1 helmet?

F1 Authentics is Formula 1's official memorabilia platform and supplies a certificate of authenticity with every item. Buy race-worn or signed helmets only with a certificate and known provenance.
