For photographers
An open letter to photographers
Helmet Archive is a free, sourced catalogue of special and one-off racing helmets. Many of our pages still have no real photograph, and we would like yours.
Most one-off helmets are worn for a single race weekend. The people who photograph them, at the track, in the paddock or in a museum, are the only reason we can see them clearly afterwards. We want those photos on the page, next to the helmet they show, with the photographer's name on them.
What we promise
- Credit every time. Your name appears under the photo on the helmet page and on our image credits page, linked to your website or profile if you give one.
- A link back. The credit points to where you want people to find your work.
- No quiet reuse. We use a photo only for the helmet and terms you agreed to, and remove it promptly if you ask.
- Your files stay yours. You keep the copyright. We never claim ownership.
What we can accept
We can only publish images that are clearly free to use:
- CC0 or public domain,
- CC BY or CC BY-SA (these permit use with credit, including on a site that carries affiliate links), or
- a licence you give us in writing for Helmet Archive, which you can limit to specific photos and withdraw later.
We cannot use images under NonCommercial (NC) or NoDerivatives (ND) licences, because the site earns a small amount from shop links. We also cannot use photos that belong to a team, agency or series unless you tell us you hold the rights or have their written consent.
How to send a photo
Please send a link to the photo rather than the file itself: a page on your own site, Flickr, Wikimedia Commons or similar. Tell us the driver, the race or season, the credit line you want and the licence. We check the helmet against our sources, and we reply if we need more.
Thank you for looking, and for the work you do.
